Blogging Rant
Posted on April 28, 2008
Have you ever met those really obnoxious people that think that their crap was golden and didn’t stink like the rest of the humble world? They are often mistakenly unaware of how stupid they really are, because they can’t see beyond their own self-inflated importance, and they obviously think that they are somehow of greater intelligence than you.
Recently, I had the pleasure of dealing with this lawyer, a person like I just described. She is so ill-mannered that I often think that they must teach that in law school. She delighted herself in thinking she got one up on me by discovering my blog, and she waved around the paper printouts - I’m surprised she actually figured out how to use the internet because, according to her letters, she obviously can’t use the English language too well. I hope that she reads this, and invests in Microsoft Word. It has a built-in spell checker.
Sometimes I have to suppress a laugh she sounds like a fool and she doesn’t even know it. I find great humor in the fact that is quite stupid and everyone one else, save her clients, are painfully aware of it except for her.
Just like real life, you’re bound to come across a blog where its owner needs to invest in Microsoft Word as well. I won’t name any names, because that would just be rude and inflammatory. And herein lies the problem of the internet: because anyone can write anything that they want, they often do. And since a blog is all about conveying your thoughts, and each person has their own personality, it’s very unfortunate that sometimes, their personality shows and they actually convey their thoughts.
What is the Fine Line Between Tasteful and Obnoxious?
- Realize that anything that you write, people will read. If you don’t want your mother, grandfather, sister, teacher, or preacher to read it, then don’t post it. If you’re trying to hide something, then don’t post it. Um, let me say that again. If you’re trying to hide something, then don’t post it. Think to yourself, “could I get into trouble by writing this?” and if the answer is yes, then don’t write it.
- Learn what TMI stands for. Too Much Information.
- Even if you consider yourself an expert about your niche, don’t act like one. You end up looking like a horse’s behind, and you’ll only convince a small portion of the population that you know what you are talking about. Instead, talk about your experiences (be sure to re-read rule #2 first, though) and how you’ve applied them to your niche.
- Do your research and learn your topic. Be prepared.
- For goodness sakes, if you’re an arrogant son of a gun, then stop it. And while you’re at it, if you cut people off while driving, stop that too.
- If you bash someone in your post, then don’t post their name. That’s just rude. And remember rule #1, because they will eventually find it and read it. And if you do bash someone, at least tell the truth. Ruining someone’s reputation, even if you didn’t directly name them, because you lied, will only serve to have karma visit your door.
- Don’t swear in your post. It makes you look uneducated and it quite possibly could make Google not like you. For emphasis, the bold function is your friend.
- Don’t post pictures of your kids. I maybe paranoid, but there are a lot of weirdos out there. The same goes for inappropriate pictures. You don’t want the weirdos looking at your web site.
- Humor is good. Mean is not.
- Realize why you have a blog. If it’s like me, it’s because you want to help people. Let that be your goal, and try to do it well.
