Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery
Posted on April 7, 2008
The success of any professional blogger is marked by your paycheck, in other words, how much money you make. That would make sense, right? This is the reason that you got into monetizing your blog in the first place. Show me the money, as they say.
Some of you may remember when I wrote the article “Content is King.” In this article, I stressed that you should always write articles that other people want to read. Of course, you should be passionate about what you write, but that isn’t the point either. You are in the business of making money, and you are providing a service to other people.
But put aside for the moment the dream of collecting your first Adsense or affiliate check. All the sponsors who have asked to put advertising on your site - let’s not talk about them. Let’s talk about the moment that you know you have a successful blog. This moment is defined not in monetary amounts, but in Readership Appreciation.
I received an email the other day from a gentleman who was thinking about starting his own freelance business. This man came to my blog from one of the articles I had submitted at Helium. I was very flattered that he had taken the time to write to me. He had gone a step above and beyond simply writing a comment - I do get flattered that people write comments to me as well - or subscribed to my newsletter.
He Wanted My Opinion
I realized at that moment that my blog was going to be very successful. I haven’t collected my first check from Google yet, or promoted any kind of product or service from my site, but I had made the first, and the most important, step. I have gained Readership Appreciation. This person has contacted me, in hopes of a response, because he trusted what I had to say. I had somehow convinced this man that what I had to say was not only worthwhile, but that he wanted to do what I am doing now.
Have you ever heard of the term “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”? Well, that man reached out to me, because he wanted to imitate what I was doing, in some way, shape or form.
How to Formulate Readership Appreciation
Sometimes it isn’t enough just to have a blog and write down whatever comes to your mind. You must actively formulate a conversation between you, and your reader. You already know one way to do this, and that is through your comments.
I’m going to leave this discussion with two open-ended questions. How else can you formulate readership appreciation? How do you engage your readers to ask questions, explore your blog further, and participate in your articles? Tell me what you think, because in a month from now, I am going to give you one of the best ways to do it.
