How do you dominate the search engines?
I get asked this question a lot, because, well, to get traffic, you need the search engines to like you. That’s not to say that every person who visits your site will get there by a search engine, but the vast majority of people who come to your site come from one of three ways: Google, Yahoo and MSN.
Think about how you surf the internet. If you’re looking up, say, How to Write an Article, then you probably go to a search engine and type in “Article Writing.” Somewhere along the line, you may eventually hit my blog.
Search Engines provide an invaluable traffic service, by sending your site a “steady stream” of visitors. There are a lot of things that you can do to increase the number of hits to your site, or in other words, increase your listing on the list of search results. This is called “SEO” or “Search Engine Optimization.” The higher your site on the list, the more likely someone will be to click on it.
SEO is pretty easy. You just need two things. The first is hard work and the second is patience.
So here is the long, steady way to gain SEO. I call this the Steady Stream Effect, in other words, you will gain increasing amounts of traffic. Post in forums, post in Yahoo Groups, and post in Google Groups. Yes, it’s that easy.
Here’s why it works. Every time you post something, put your site in your signature line. Some forums allow you two and some don’t care how many you have. The rule of thumb, though, is that you need a forum that’s at least PR4 or above, and you want to seek out a group that is active - some are just dead groups and not worth your time. When Google, Yahoo, or MSN go to crawl that site, they will pick up your web site links.
It takes a lot of time to generate traffic this way because you need to have around 3,000 posts or emails to make a sizable hit on the search engines. Some forums or email lists limit the number of links you can put in your signature line, too. I can understand this, because it’s spammy otherwise, but it does make for inconvenience for the blogger.
Taking the time to generate free links like this is a good policy, however. Every morning, the first thing that I do is check my forums, Yahoo Groups, and newsgroups. Then, I check my stats. (We use FireStats here on the 5 Star Dreams blog site.) Inside of my stats, I can see who has visited my site and where they have come from. I don’t generate a lot of hits via the forums or groups, but sometimes people do wander over.
So there you have it, an easy way to generate more traffic for your site. Using your signature line around the internet has two effects. First, the search engines will crawl your links so that you can have a Steady Stream of traffic. Secondly, members and visitors of the forums (or groups) will see your signature line, and perhaps click on a link. For a little time invested daily, you can rise your traffic steadily.
