What is a Pillar Article, and How Can You Use It for Your Site?

Posted on March 25, 2008

Pillars of SuccessA few week ago I preached about the importance of avoiding “spike” traffic, or traffic that’s generated from a controversial blog article. Some articles by their nature are spike articles, such as political or religious ones. Perhaps you have a blog dedicated entirely to spike articles, such as “How Much We Hate Hillary Clinton.”

So today I’m going to introduce you to the reverse concept, called Pillar Articles. On the surface, they are no different than your other blog article, but for some reason, you generate a bunch of traffic from them. People find that information useful, so they stumble or digg your article, or they link to it from inside their own blog.

They are a lot different than spike articles because they consistently bring in traffic to your blog, and generally, people find them useful rather than inflaming.

So let’s dig into why an article is a Pillar article, and how you can reproduce those articles on your site. You’ll often see them on other people’s blogs (”The 10 Most Useful Articles” or “Top Blog Articles”).

  • Pillar articles provide some kind of answer that a lot of people are asking.
  • Sometimes they provide a short tutorial, or “How To.”
  • It isn’t time dependent, in other words, it’s as important today as it will be 5 years from now.
  • Traffic reproduces itself, because as more people find your article, the more people link to it or traceback it, and the traffic is consistent.
  • Provides a reason that people will want to stay around your blog (e.g. bookmark, subscribe to RSS, join your mailing list.)

Ok, all this is great, but how do we go about writing an article that other people will enjoy so much that they will want to refer to it time and time again?

One notion on this blog, and on another that I’m launching shortly, is to do a series, so that you’ve got people “hooked.” On one blog post, all by itself, put the list of other blog posts in that series, so people have a quick and easy way to stumble, digg, traceback, or link to your articles. As you can see on this site, my series is how to bring in more traffic. By the nature of this blog alone, I created Pillar articles. People can poke around my site and find out a lot of useful information.

I once created a static site that was an entire series (e.g. step 1, step 2, step 3) on how to breed betta fish. I was surprised that other people actually found it, bookmarked it, and kept coming back to it. I didn’t do anything to promote the site, it was just something that I wrote. After being on the internet for about 2 years, it eventually got a Pagerank of 5 from Google.

Sometimes, blog writers do things backwards, because that is what they know how to do. Imagine if I had a blog attached to that article!

So tell me, what did you think of my blog article?
