Traffic Building Trumps Income Generation

Pennies ShinyOne of the reasons that I am such a big fan of using Wordpress.com, at least for the first couple of months of a blog’s life, is for the traffic generation possibilities.

Wordpress.com has a dashboard, where fellow bloggers log in and can hop around to other people’s blogs. If you use the Tags, you can often get a few people to stop by your posts the day it comes out.

Assuming that your long term goal for blogging is going to be to generate money, you have to get people interested enough to stay on your web site. And in order to get people to stay on your web site, you are going to have to get some traffic.

Why is the Big T word so important? Because most methods of income generation rely on getting someone to your web site to begin with. And unfortunately, traffic generation is the biggest challenge that any blogger faces.

The problem is that high-traffic begets high-traffic. If you have a highly visible site, then more and more people are going to link to you. That’s just the way the internet works. But that poses a problem for anyone who doesn’t have a high-traffic site: how do you get high traffic to begin with?

Well, first things are first.

Go ahead and do the normal things, like submit your site to all the search engines and the blog directories, including addme.com, submitexpress.com and submitfire.com. Do a Google search on “blog directories” and I bet you’ll come up with thousands.

In respect to traffic building, the only thing that you have to keep in mind is that you haven’t tapped into the right way to market your site yet. Be experimental! Try different things.

Sometimes I come across promotional items from my affiliate links, and many of these items are geared toward generating traffic for your site. In the baby stages (I say, anything less than 6 months old), you may not want to plop down some money for anything, much less what could be a scam. But try some of them out, and if you do, ALWAYS use your affiliate link. That way, if you are going to be out your money, then at least you’ll get something in return for it.
